भारत के चोटी के एकल टेनिस खिलाड़ी सुमित नागल का सामना रविवार से शुरू हो रहे आस्ट्रेलियाई ओपन के पहले दौर में चेक गणराज्य के थॉमस माचाक से होगा। 27 वर्ष के नागल फिलहाल एटीपी रैंकिंग में 96वें स्थान पर हैं। उन्होंने शीर्ष 104 खिलाड़ियों में होने की वजह से सत्र के पहले ग्रैंडस्लैम के मुख्य ड्रॉ में जगह बनाई है।
हरियाणा के इस खिलाड़ी ने पिछले साल आस्ट्रेलियाई ओपन के पहले दौर में 27वीं रैंकिंग वाले कजाखस्तान के अलेक्जेंडर बुबलिक को हराया था लेकिन अगले दौर में चीन के जुनचेंग शांग से हार गए। वह आस्ट्रेलियाई ओपन की तैयारी के लिये अहम माने जाने वाले आकलैंड एएसबी क्लासिक में अमेरिका के एलेक्स मिचेलसेन से पहले ही दौर में हार गए थे। नागल डेविस कप खेलने से इनकार के कारण हाल ही में चर्चा में रहे थे।
